According to the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006,
MSME stands for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Development and is classified into
two sections, namely, the manufacturing section and the service section. Manufacturing
Enterprises are those that are engaged in the manufacture or production of goods or employing
plant and machinery in the process of value addition to the final product having a distinct name
or character or use. Service Enterprises are those that are engaged in providing or rendering of
services and are defined in terms of investment in equipment. MSMEs are primarily labour oriented.
In the manufacturing sector, micro enterprises are those with an investment of that less than 25lakhs
in plant and machinery. Small enterprises are those with an investment of that less than Rs 5crore in
plant and machinery. Medium enterprises are those with an investment of that less than Rs.10crores
in plant and machinery.In the service sector, micro enterprises are those with an investment of that less
than Rs. 10lakh in equipment. Small enterprises are those with an investment of that less than Rs. 2crores
in equipment. Medium enterprises are those with an investment of that less than Rs. 5crores in equipment.
